A dishwasher does not fill like a sink. It keeps a shallow volume of water in a sump, pumps that water repeatedly through spray arms, filters out much of the loosened debris, and replaces the dirty water between stages.

What happens in five steps

1. The tub receives and may heat water

An inlet valve admits water until a float, pressure device, flow sensor, or timed control reaches the intended level. Depending on the machine and incoming water, a heater may raise the temperature.

2. Detergent water circulates

The dispenser opens, and a circulation pump pushes the hot solution through angled jets in the spray arms. Those jets make the arms rotate while water, detergent chemistry, heat, and time loosen food and grease.

3. Filters protect the recirculating water

A filter system or food-disposal mechanism keeps much of the removed debris from returning to dishes or blocking the pump. The drain pump then sends dirty water through the drain hose.

4. Fresh water rinses the load

The machine refills and circulates fresh water to remove remaining soil and detergent. Rinse aid may be released during the final rinse to reduce surface tension so water sheets off more easily.

5. The drying system removes remaining moisture

Designs differ. Drying may use retained heat, a heating element, forced air, condensation on cooler tub walls, an automatically opened door, or a combination. Plastic often remains wetter because it stores less heat than ceramic or glass.

Why an efficient cycle can take hours

Modern dishwashers often trade time for lower water and energy use. Longer soaking and recirculation let detergent, heat, and spray action work with less water. Soil sensors, selected options, and incoming water temperature also change runtime.

Do dishes need to be rinsed first?

ENERGY STAR recommends scraping food rather than pre-rinsing under a running faucet. Remove bones, pits, labels, and large debris, then load items so spray can reach their surfaces. A machine or local water condition may still require specific preparation described in its manual.

Why hand dish soap is a problem

Hand-washing liquid is designed to create suds. In a dishwasher, excessive foam can interfere with pumping and escape around the door. Use only detergent labeled for automatic dishwashers and follow its storage and safety directions.

Not every cycle sanitizes

A sanitizing claim applies to a designated cycle on a certified machine when that cycle completes under its required conditions. It does not mean every quick, eco, delicate, or normal program sterilizes the load.

A safety boundary

Dishwasher detergent can irritate or burn tissue. Keep it in its original container and away from children. Use only dishwasher-safe items, load sharp objects safely, and avoid hot water, steam, and exposed heating elements when opening or unloading.

The useful mental model

A dishwasher is a recycling shower with scheduled water changes. It repeatedly sprays one small batch, filters it, drains it, replaces it for rinsing, and then helps the remaining water leave the dishes.
